Exclusive Interveiw With Mrs.Zhikrah A ‘Folake Akanbi

Monday, August 27, 2012
An interview with one of Nigeria’s most glamorous women, Mrs.Zhikrah A ‘Folake Akanbi. C.E.O LibraGold Travels and Tours Ltd. Who recently allowed us into her world. She tells us how she balances being a good wife, mother and a business woman and still stays stylish and beautiful.

Q.You are always looking good, well dressed and your skin glowing, what is the secret of your beauty; can you let us in on your beauty régime?

A. I don’t have a particular beauty regime, I’m a massage  person,  I like going for massage sessions, I also gym (I exercise a lot), I do my 45 minute brisk walk every day, I also try no matter how tight my schedule is to at least scrub my face and use mask once in a week probably on Sunday. Then, I also visit the spa.

Q.I have observed that you are always cool, calm and collected no matter the situation around you?

A.It generally has to do with my upbringing then, also if you are in a happy relationship you will definitely not worry about things that are not meant to be worried about. Another thing is inner peace, I have that because I trust in God totally, I try to not let anything disturb my peace.

Q.You are a very busy woman because I personally know you have branches in different states here in the country and also outside the country but you still seem to be able to balance the home and work, how do you do that?

A. The most important thing for a woman is to know what she is doing meaning she needs to be focused.  I always say family is priority; you most definitely need to take care of your family.  You however also need to know that your husband is there for you and you also take care of yourself. Over the years, I have been able to surround myself with good and capable people who take care of certain things when I’m not around. Also with the help of GSM, I have been able to monitor, delegate and schedule all activities. One thing my husband and I do is that, when ever am not in town, he schedules his activities within town and if he is out of town, I schedule mine within town. When I am around, I always work from my office at home.
With several branches in Ibadan, Lagos and Abuja, I have capable staffs that handle these branches for me. Besides, being a professional, I always know what to look out for in my staffs and their output.  If after delegating, there are lapses, I take care of it and they learn from that experience and end up not making the same mistake again. I identify their strengths and weaknesses, and I help them build on their strengths.   This is what has happened over the years.
At the end of each year, we all come together to give Almighty God thanks for seeing us through another year.

Q. How do you handle your children being the mother of 3 vibrant young men?

A. Am a very religious person and as a Muslim, I was thought that before you conceive, there is a special prayer you should say to God for the kind of children you want. And I thank God that he gave me exactly the children I asked for. They are peaceful, not hooligans, loving, obedient and I pray that they remain that way. The most wonderful thing is that, they are equally religious as I am.

Q. Do you think men in Africa appreciate when a woman is well kept and dresses nice (because some women think it is unnecessary)?
A. It is very important for a woman to take very good care of herself. If not for her husband,  for herself.  If you take good care of yourself, you will have confidence especially for a co-operate woman like myself. No matter where you go or who you have an appointment with, you are ready to go. I can say that am fashionable, so I take everything beauty and fashion like real business.

Q. How do you see the Nigerian beauty and fashion industry and how can you compare them with those in the western countries.

A. Fashion industry in Nigeria has really improved. Nigerian fashion industry makes things that are so traditional, glamorous yet African. You can’t get it anywhere else, for example, the silk and chiffon (which I wear a lot) are so unique. Though I buy when I go to Saudi and Dubai but the ones my Nigerian designer makes for me is different from the one I buy from out there.  So I believe that the Nigeria fashion industry has taken the world by storm and the sky is just the beginning.

Q. What is your advice to young ladies (in Nigeria) who seem to be following the trend of doing anything for money?

A. Well, doing anything for money is not the best and as a woman and a mother, I always advice young ladies to be focused and know what they are doing and what they want in life. One thing that has affected this generation is the exposure which is more than what we had in our generation and it always easily encourages them to do the wrong thing.
On the parent side, I believe that with the prayers of our parents. The good example they set and whatever religion they practice, they practice it well and feed them with the word of God all the time also comfort, sustainability and effective communication should be established between parents and their wards.

Q. What memorable thing have your children done that surprised you?

Answer. I remember when my eldest son wanted to do his S.S.C.E. I would call him several times to remind him to read.  I kept worrying him day in day out, calling him almost every hour. One day when I called him he said,’ mummy, I am the one that said I want to study architecture……………the most important thing is that people should call you mama architect so don’t worry, I will study hard and pass’.  So I had to stop worrying him by force.  Now he is studying civil engineering and he would sometimes call me “mama engineer”.

Q. Words of advice to women out there?

A. What I encourage women to do is create and give themselves inner peace through their knowledge of the word of God and submit yourself to the will of Almighty God. Also, mix with the right crowd, avoid friends who do not contribute to your marital success, be focused and another thing is for you to know your strength, build on it, know your weaknesses and reduce its defects on you.

So basically, it is God’s doing because you can make plans and things don’t work out as expected, but with God, all things will work out for you. Only God has been able to sustain my family, protect me and my husband and also enlarge my business.
I thank all mighty God for where He has brought m e to and the place He is taking my family and I too. Thank you.
